As promised last week, we have managed to bring you a guest spot blog entry from the founder of www.LEATHERHELP.com, Mr. Chris Repp.  We have spent the last few months getting to know Chris and his vision for the leather industry and we are very proud to be able to bring you content from such an experienced leather aficionado.   We hope Chris will give us some more of his time in the near future and that we can continue to bring you articles from leather experts of the same calibre.

In the bullets below I will give you a number of important reasons you should know if you have base-print or two-tone leather.  But first here is an introduction to the subject.

Look closely at your leather.  Does it have different shades in the finish?  Does it have high spots and low spots that give it an antiqued or distressed look?  If so you have a specially finished leather. It goes by many industry names such as base-print, two-tone, antiqued or molted leather.  Whatever you call it, there are a few things you should know if you are considering buying or own this type of leather.

• This leather finish is made by applying 2 distinct layers of finish to a tanned leather surface.  The first is usually sprayed on the entire hide and is called the base coat.  The second can be sprayed, rolled, hand-rubbed or brushed on top of the base coat and is called the print coat.
• The base coat is opaque and covers color variations in the hide to give one solid color to the leather.  The print coat is a tinted transparent color that gives depth, sheen and protection to the base coat and to the leather.
• All that to say, base-print is a beautiful looking leather finish that adds character to your leather furniture.
• The multi-tone nature of the finish will tend to hide some stains better than a leather that is finished in all one color.
• But a few warnings
  • Some manufacturers have had some problems with the adhesion of the print color to the base color.  When you get your leather, (or if you can sneak and do this in the showroom even better) use a safe leather cleaner to wipe a back or side area of the leather.  If the rag shows a bit of purple color, that color is the print coat.
  • Even with a good base-print, be careful to use safe cleaners on your base-print leather.  A strong cleaner will remove the print coat and the base color alone will stand out sorely
  • .Scratches to this leather will show up lighter because you see the hide or the base coat showing through the print coat.

Don’t despair if you do take the print coat off of your leather, it can be restored.  But especially for this job, hire an experienced professional. Base-print work is a more challenging technique and needs the touch of an experienced leather professional

Aviation leather is much more complex than regular grade leather as it has to be sprayed with a flame retardant product to ensure it meets FAA regulations. It is therefore hugely expensive to reupholster or replace. It is therefore extremely appealing to be able to offer repair and refinishing services within this industry sector. However, the cost of having such an expensive piece of machinery out of service, it pays to implement a maintenance program to extend the life of your aircraft interiors. The frequency of maintenance depends largely on the size of the interior and the amount of traffic your aircraft will have. Wear and tear differs widely from aircraft to aircraft. A commercial airline for example, will have much higher usage, but will alos have a much more durable ‘protected’ leather upholstery. Whereas, a private/corporate jet with have a softer (possibly aniline) leather which, whilst no where near the amount of passengers, will wear much quicker and need a much more frequent maintenance plan.

Volviendo para su coche nuevo de solo dos semanas se encuentra que en  la bolsa de la compra que usted ha dejado en el asiento del pasajero se ha derramado el limpiador de baño y todo sobre su precioso nuevo  cuero=NO TIENE PRECIO.

Si, esto es cierto. Tenemos una chica joven que nos llamo hace varios meses atrás en pánico total. Ella había estado haciendo la compra semanal, etc. Entonces ella dejo todo esto sobre el asiento mientras  se estaba haciendo la manicura. El calor en el (a hora punta en verano) había causado que la botella que contenía el limpiador de baño/cocina se abriese y el buen liquido azul se había derramado en el asiento del coche nuevo de solo dos semanas.

Al ver el asiento, vimos que esta era una reparación buena y fácil (y mucho mas un placer para ella) pero el truco  es que nosotros teníamos que esperar hasta que el marido se fuese a trabajar y  pudiésemos terminar la reparación tal que  ella decidió que no se le dijese al marido¡¡¡¡ No hay que preocuparse, ha pasado bastante tiempo desde que ocurrió el accidente y por nuestra parte no se han mencionado nunca nombres. Pero pensábamos que era una buena historia para compartir con el mundo.

Con toda seriedad, entendemos como algo así puede ser de traumático. La mayoría de las personas no se dan mucha cuenta de que puede llegar a ser reparado y el pensar siempre en pagar por sustituir una silla o tapizarla es enorme.
